According to an eyewitness present near Marichi Kund Chowk in Puri, the incident occurred when either a rope barricade collapsed or several devotees lost their balance, triggering panic among the crowd.
The witness claimed that nearly 40 to 50 devotees fell over one another during the chaos. Several people sustained injuries, while four to five devotees reportedly suffered serious injuries. The eyewitness also stated that he helped rescue around 20 people, who were later transported to nearby hospitals by ambulance.
Later, he learned that an elderly devotee had reportedly died following the incident.
Around 200 Devotees Hospitalized
Sources said that nearly 200 devotees have been admitted to hospitals and temporary medical centers across Puri. Most of the patients reportedly complained of breathing difficulties, exhaustion, dehydration, and minor injuries caused by overcrowding during the Jagannath Rath Yatra.
Medical teams, emergency responders, and healthcare workers remained on high alert throughout the festival, providing immediate treatment to affected devotees.
