Sheikh Shahjahan Arrest: TMC Leader Makes Bold Claim, High Court Clarifies

Leader of the Trinamool Congress Kunal Ghosh declared on Monday that Sheikh Shahjahan, who is charged with rape and stealing land in the North 24 Parganas village of Sandeshkhali, will be taken into custody in seven days.

Ghosh’s remarks follow the Calcutta High Court’s ruling that there is no stay on Shahjahan’s arrest. Shahjahan has been evading capture since January 5th, when agents from the Enforcement Directorate attacked him when they went to Sandeshkhali to examine his property as part of a ration scam.

“Public notice shall be given in this case. There is no stay order in Sandeshkhali cases. There is no reason to not arrest him,” the high court had said.

“About the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan, Abhishek Banerjee is correct. The matter was stuck in the legal tangle of the court. The opposition was doing politics using this opportunity. Thanks to the High Court today for clarifying the matter and allowing the police to take action. Shajahan will be arrested within seven days,” the TMC leader said.

TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had claimed that Shajahan could not be arrested because of legal tangles and stay on FIRs filed by the police.

Sandeshkhali, a village in North 24 Parganas, has become a major flashpoint ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Several women have accused Shahjahan along with his aides Shibprasad Hazara and Uttam Sardar of land grabbing and sexual assault.

Will intervene if elected govt does not act’: Bengal governor

West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose has said that he will intervene if the government does not take action.

“As we know from the newspaper reports, the Police came there, ministers went there, petitions were received. From what I understand from the newspapers, more than 800 petitions have been received. Process has started, women have come forward, they have started asserting themselves and now there will be a change,” the governor was quoted by ANI as saying.

“Generals may not fight, they make others fight. The Governor’s job is to see when the elected government takes action within the rule of law. If that is not done, then the Governor will intervene,” Bose added.
