Bilkis Bano case Updates: The Gujarat government‘s August 2022 decision to award remission to 11 convicts in the case of the gang rape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots was overturned on Monday by a two-judge Supreme Court panel.
The highest court declared that Gujarat was not “competent” to decide on remission because her gang-rapists were found guilty and jailed in Maharashtra.
After 11 days of hearings in the case, the bench, which included Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan, reserved the ruling on October 12 of last year. Several requests were sent contesting the remission, one of which was from Bilkis herself. Mahua Moitra, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Subhashini Ali of the CPI(M) are two among the many petitioners in the case.
The freeing of the prisoners caused widespread indignation. Their pardon and release from custody occurred on the eve of India’s 75th anniversary of independence and only hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech to the populace from Delhi’s famed Red Fort.
