Cyclone

The name “Michaung,” proposed by Myanmar, will be applied if the system strengthens into a cyclone.

Odisha is expected to see extremely heavy rain on December 4 and 5, according to the IMD, which also issued warnings in orange (be prepared) and yellow (be updated).

Cyclone Michaung’s Origin and Intensification

Cyclone ‘Michaung’, which has been brewing in the Bay of Bengal, is likely to cause an increase in wind and rainfall intensity for the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh and the northern coast of Tamil Nadu starting on December 3.

Tamil Nadu, battered by nonstop rain for the past three days, is preparing for an impending cyclonic storm, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) weather report. On the evening of December 4, Cyclone “Miachaung” is predicted to make landfall around the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Cyclone ‘Miachaung’ will be the fourth cyclone in the Bay of Bengal and the sixth in the Indian Ocean this year when it forms. Myanmar gave the name of the cyclonic storm.

Expected weather impact

The IMD has predicted rain activity in a number of cyclone-prone southern regions, including Tamil Nadu, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Odisha.

The morning advisory from the Met Department states that rain is expected in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today. Between December 2 and 4, there may be sporadic heavy to extremely heavy rains in Puducherry and north coastal Tamil Nadu. A similar prediction has been made for Andhra Pradesh’s coastal regions, where heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated between December 3 and December 5. Very strong downpours are also expected to hit Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh on December 3 and 4.

In addition to the southern states and Union territories, the eastern state of Odisha is expected to see heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on December 4 and 5, especially in its south coastline and south interior regions.

Squally winds over the southwest Bay of Bengal are predicted to reach 40–50 kph with gusts up to 60 kmph starting early on December 1st, due to the influence of Cyclone ‘Miachaung’. After that, starting early on December 2, the wind is predicted to reach 50–60 kmph with gusts up to 70 kmph, according to news agency PTI.

IMD alert prior to Cyclone “Miachaung”

A warning to fisherman has been issued by the IMD due to the impending cyclonic storm. On December 1 and 2, fishermen are cautioned against entering the southeast Bay of Bengal. Additionally, they have been instructed not to travel between December 1 and December 4 through the southwest portion of the Bay of Bengal and the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

According to the IMD advisory, fishermen are warned against going into the west central Bay of Bengal and along and off the coast of Andhra Pradesh from December 2 am to December 5.

Additionally, it has been recommended that individuals at sea return to the coast of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by December 1. This alert is specifically for fishermen operating off the coast of Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

Getting ready to combat Cyclone “Miachaung”

All resources have been placed on high alert by Indian Coast Guard Region East due to the growing cyclonic storm in the southern Bay of Bengal. Teams for responding to disasters have also been maintained ready for quick activation. Fishing boats and other vessels have also been advised to head back into port.

The impact of the storm in Odisha, which frequently experiences the worst effects of cyclones, could only be determined once it forms, according to IMD scientist Umashankar Dash. Nevertheless, the eastern coastal state has issued a warning for up to seven districts. The collectors of the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam were warned to exercise caution in light of the approaching storm by Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahoo in a letter.

The expectation is that preparations and international cooperation will lessen the damage on coastal districts as the world monitors Cyclone Michaung’s progression. This incident serves as a reminder of how critical it is to combat climate change and collaborate with others in order to effectively handle the growing issues brought on by extreme weather.
