Lou Holtz was a famous figure in college football, known for his leadership and coaching. He was the head coach of the University of Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996, where he led the team to a historic 12-0 season. Holtz won 249 games as a collegiate head coach with 100 of those victories earned at Notre Dame.
“Notre Dame is saddened by the passing of Lou Holtz, a famous football coach, a cherished part of the Notre Dame community, and a loving husband, father, and grandfather,” said University President Rev. Robert A. Dowd.
Holtz started coaching at William & Mary in 1969. In 1972, he moved to North Carolina State University. Over four years with the Wolfpack, he won 33 games and led the team to the 1973 ACC Championship. Holtz returned to campus during the 2025 football season and presented the colors for the national anthem before the kickoff of the Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M game.
“Holtz is remembered for his enduring values of faith, family, service, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others,” his family said in a statement. “His influence extended far beyond the football field through the Holtz Charitable Foundation and the many players, colleagues, and communities shaped by his leadership.”
